Wood-rot fungus damages Āraiši Lake Fortress, rescue needs one million euros

The Āraiši Lake Fortress, a unique reconstructed timber settlement built on a lake, is facing serious structural problems after a wood-decaying fungus attacked the log foundations supporting the wooden dwellings. Experts warn that without prompt action, the damage could threaten the stability and survival of the structure itself.

The root cause lies in chronic underfunding, which for years has prevented necessary preventive maintenance and repair work. As a result, the fungal decay process has advanced to the point where large-scale reconstruction is now required.

Agreement on a rescue plan

This week, the National Heritage Board and the Cēsis municipal government reached an agreement on an action plan to save the fortress in five stages. The total estimated cost of the plan is one million euros.

However, neither the municipality nor the state heritage authority currently has free funds available to cover this amount. The situation highlights a broader problem — the inability of the state and local government system to respond quickly and allocate the resources needed to rescue a nationally significant heritage site once it has reached a critical condition.

The Āraiši Lake Fortress is one of Latvia's most recognizable pieces of archaeological heritage, and its preservation matters not only locally but also for national cultural identity. It remains unclear how and from what sources the funding for the five rescue stages will be secured.
