This marks their second straight final appearance. They will defend their title on Sunday against Spain, who defeated France in the other semifinal.
All goals came in the second half. England took the lead early in the half through Anthony Gordon, who finished a pass from Morgan Rogers past goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. Argentina pressed for an equalizer and found it in the 86th minute when Enzo Fernandez scored from distance after a pass from Lionel Messi. In stoppage time, Lautaro Martinez headed in a cross from Messi to make it 2-1.
England tried to respond but failed to level the score. They will face France in the third-place match on Saturday.
Argentina had a perfect group stage, winning all three matches. In the knockout rounds, they beat Cape Verde in extra time, Egypt after coming from behind, and Switzerland in extra time. England's path included wins over Croatia, Panama, DR Congo, Mexico, and Norway, plus a draw with Ghana.
This is the first World Cup with 48 teams, held across Mexico, the USA, and Canada.
