Confident Arsenal launch title defence with dominant win over Coventry

Arsenal beat newly promoted Coventry 3-0 in their season opener, showing the confidence gained from last season's Premier League title win. Captain Martin Odegaard says the team's mindset is to attack the title again, not merely defend it.

Arsenal opened their Premier League campaign with a comfortable 3-0 win over newly promoted Coventry, and both players and supporters displayed the confidence built from last season's title triumph — their first in 22 years. New gold signage reading "Champions" now hangs above the stadium entrance, players were individually introduced before their warm-up, and fans sang about the team's champion status throughout the match.

Captain Martin Odegaard wrote in his programme notes that winning the trophy had given the squad greater confidence, adding that the team's mentality is not to defend the title but to attack it and fight for it again.

A milestone for Arteta

With the win, manager Mikel Arteta reached 150 Premier League victories in fewer than 250 matches, becoming only the fifth manager in league history to do so, joining Pep Guardiola, Jose Mourinho, Jurgen Klopp and Sir Alex Ferguson. Arteta has also focused on lifting the atmosphere at the Emirates, noting that nervous energy from supporters last season often affected the team during the title race.

Goals from Kai Havertz, Odegaard and Bukayo Saka secured the win — a trio that started together in the Premier League line-up only once last season due to injuries. With all three fit and playing together, Arsenal raced to a 2-0 lead within 23 minutes, their fastest such start since a 2023 match against Wolves.

Tzolis makes an instant impact

Summer signing Christos Tzolis, a £34m arrival from Club Brugge, also caught the eye, providing the assist for Saka's goal. The Greece international scored 17 goals and provided 23 assists last season as Brugge won the Belgian title, and both Odegaard and Arteta praised his performance highly following his Premier League debut.
