Arsenal, the London football club defending the English Premier League title, beat Liverpool 1-0 at Liverpool's Anfield stadium. It was the club's first win there since 2012, when current manager Mikel Arteta was still playing in Arsenal's midfield. The result matters because it came nine games into the season, and Arsenal's title defence is going to plan.

No shots on target

Liverpool pressed hard in the first half, but Arsenal's defence limited the hosts to zero accurate shots. According to the source, it is the first time on record that Liverpool have failed to land at least one attempt on target at home. Kai Havertz scored the winner, finishing a low cross from Declan Rice delivered across the box to the far post.

Arsenal also won 18 fouls, with Jurrien Timber, Martin Odegaard and Noni Madueke drawing three each. Ezri Konsa won all eight duels he contested. Rice made 62 touches, the most of any Arsenal player, and was named player of the match.

Manager and pundits

Arteta called his side's defensive display remarkable and said he loves it when the team achieves something it has not done for many years. He also praised the spirit shown by the players. Under Arteta, Arsenal have won 81 per cent of league games in which they scored first.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher praised Arsenal's resilience and called Rice the best midfield player in the Premier League. Gary Neville described the performance as a defensive masterclass. Rice himself said the togetherness of the defensive line was something he had never seen before.
