Arteta calls Brighton defeat 'a big lesson' for Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta says his side's defeat by Brighton was a valuable lesson in what it takes to compete at the top of the Premier League, after a performance he described as well below the standards he demands.

Since taking over in 2019, Arteta has consistently stressed the importance of physicality and winning duels. But against Brighton, his team were outfought across the pitch, losing challenges they would normally expect to win. Arteta said he was "extremely disappointed", pointing to defensive uncertainty, lost control of midfield, and a lack of attacking creativity.

Explaining the below-par display, Arteta said Brighton were simply excellent and consistently won the 50-50 moments that decided the game. He also acknowledged technical errors that allowed Brighton to exploit gaps. Still, he reminded reporters that the season overall has started well, noting that 15 Arsenal players featured at the World Cup over the summer and rejoined pre-season training later than their team-mates.

Brighton's firepower

Brighton currently sit as the Premier League's top scorers with 16 goals, eight of them coming in the past week alone. Arsenal, by contrast, had conceded the fewest goals in the league last season and had let in just one goal in their first four matches before this defeat.

Former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, said Brighton "battered" Arsenal from start to finish and could have scored even more. He praised Brighton's organisation, fitness and fearless approach, crediting manager Fabian Hurzeler for the team's preparation.

Arsenal trailed 2-0 at half-time and have not come back to win a league match from that scoreline since a game at Bolton in March 2008. Former defender Curtis Davies suggested the result could be put down to a one-off blip, but acknowledged the defence looked far from its usual self and that Arsenal barely created a threat going forward.

Arsenal spent roughly £200m in the summer transfer window as they look to strengthen their squad for a title challenge this season.
