PM candidate to come from AS
The "United List" (AS), winner of the Saeima election, is moving toward forming a new government and has decided that its candidate for prime minister will come from within the party's own ranks. This was confirmed to the LETA news agency by one of the party's leaders, Edgars Tavars, who has so far served as minister for smart administration and regional development.
Finance ministry to remain with AS
According to Tavars, AS intends to continue overseeing the finance minister portfolio, which the party also held in the previous government. This suggests that economic and budget matters remain a priority area for the party heading into government talks.
Eyeing the foreign ministry as well
Beyond the finance post, AS is not ruling out seeking the foreign affairs minister position as well. Such a move would indicate the party's wish to shape not only domestic policy but also Latvia's foreign policy direction in the next government.
The exact composition of the coalition and the distribution of ministerial portfolios among potential partners remains unknown at this stage. However, Tavars' comments suggest that AS will take a firm stance on key government posts during coalition negotiations. Clearer information on the direction of coalition talks and the division of ministries among participating parties is expected in the coming weeks.
