Aspar Moto2 Teammates Alonso and Holgado Trade Sharp Words Ahead of Australian Round

A public rift has emerged inside the Aspar team before the Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island, part of the motorcycle racing world championship. The two Moto2 riders involved, David Alonso and Dani Holgado, will both make their debuts in MotoGP, the sport's premier class, next year, but will ride for different teams.

What happened in Indonesia

The relationship between the teammates was already tense, and it fell apart completely after an incident at the Indonesian round. There, a collision caused by Holgado in the very first corner pushed Alonso out of the race and stopped him from rejoining the track. Alonso crashed and suffered a lung contusion. Holgado got through, kept his position and finished third to take a place on the podium.

Alonso: there is no team

Speaking to DAZN journalists in Australia, Alonso, who is Spanish-Colombian, said the Indonesia incident seemed similar to earlier ones and that there was no point wasting time on people who did not deserve it. He said each of them would go their own way. Alonso also claimed there were no relations or chemistry in the garage, so it could not be called a team, and that the incident itself was the smallest problem.

Holgado: these things happen

Holgado answered in a more conciliatory tone. He said such situations happen in the sport and recalled that he himself had been taken out at Misano. He confirmed he had already apologised for ruining Alonso's race at the first corner and said no rider wants to cause such a crash.

Next season

Alonso will race for the LCR Honda team in MotoGP from 2027. Holgado will make his premier-class debut with the Gresini Ducati team.
