English club Aston Villa have opened contact with Manchester United regarding a possible move for Dutch striker Joshua Zirkzee, according to transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano. He reports that only initial communication has taken place between the clubs so far, with no concrete offer or negotiation of terms yet in place.

Watkins' future uncertain

Villa's search for a new forward has gained urgency amid the possible departure of Ollie Watkins to Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal. Romano explains that Villa's move for Zirkzee is linked to the expectation that Al Hilal will return with a renewed approach for Watkins.

This summer has already brought significant squad changes for the Birmingham-based club, which has seen players including Lucas Digne, Youri Tielemans, Morgan Rogers and Ezri Konsa depart.

Zirkzee seeking more playing time

Zirkzee joined Manchester United from Bologna for £34.5 million but has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter, scoring just nine goals in 75 appearances. He has, however, impressed with two goals in pre-season friendlies this summer. He currently sits behind Benjamin Sesko and Bryan Mbeumo in United's forward pecking order, which could make a move to a club offering more playing time appealing. Romano notes that Italian clubs have also shown interest in Zirkzee, but Aston Villa are among the more recent suitors.
