Aston Villa to take legal action against Jamie Carragher over insults
English Premier League football club Aston Villa says it will start legal action against former player and TV pundit Jamie Carragher. The club accuses him of insulting the team and its supporters.

Aston Villa, the Birmingham-based Premier League football club, has announced it will begin legal action against pundit Jamie Carragher, saying his remarks amounted to unacceptable insults. The statement was posted on the club's social media accounts on Friday and signed by chairman Nassef Sawiris. It accuses Carragher of insulting the team and its supporters.
The club said it would not allow anyone to halt its rise in English and European football.
What triggered the dispute
Carragher, who works as a football pundit for Sky Sports and the American broadcaster CBS, angered Villa fans during an episode of the Stick to Football podcast. He suggested that Villa manager Unai Emery might be interested in becoming Manchester United's head coach. According to the discussion, Michael Carrick's position at United is uncertain after a poor start to the season.
Carragher said Aston Villa would never be Manchester United. He described a chain in football in which Real Madrid can take United's best player, as it did with Cristiano Ronaldo, while clubs below Villa can take its players or manager. He ended the remark with a crude phrase telling Villa fans to be quiet.
The pundit's explanation
Later, on social media, Carragher said it had been a joke, prompted by the criticism Villa supporters had directed at him over his comments about Emery. He said he hoped the clips circulating would also show him praising Emery and Villa for years, including their 2026 Europa League win in Istanbul.
On The Overlap Daily, Carragher said he considers Emery the best manager in the league and that United should ask what the best option available to them is. He stressed he was not saying Emery would leave, only that he would ask the question himself. He added that the row had grown beyond what he intended.
