Asus has made it official: the Xbox Ally X20 handheld gaming PC no longer requires buyers to purchase a bundle with pricy AR glasses. The device is now available for pre-order on its own through Best Buy and Asus's online store for $1,300, with shipments beginning October 15th.

According to Asus spokesperson Don Nguyen, the retail unit matches the ROG 20th Anniversary model previously previewed by The Verge — a translucent design with gold trim.

What sets it apart

The headline feature is a larger 7.4-inch 1080p OLED display, described as the brightest, fastest, and clearest screen yet seen on a handheld gaming device. The Ally X20 also features more comfortable grips, a D-pad that can switch between 4-way and 8-way modes, and the removal of the Xbox "Library" button that previously interrupted gameplay.

Pricing and lineup

The $1,300 price tag is $300 higher than the original Xbox Ally X, which will remain on sale at $1,000 alongside the cheaper $600 Xbox Ally, according to Asus representative Anthony Spence.

For buyers willing to spend $2,500, Asus is sweetening its bundle option, which pairs the Ally X20 with matching AR glasses, a Dbrand Killswitch protective case featuring a screen cover and kickstand, and a branded Pelican carrying case.

While the Ally X20 won't be the most powerful or most affordable Windows handheld on the market, it may prove to be among the most comfortable and refined to use. A fuller assessment will follow once reviews arrive this fall.
