US detains Latvian dancer Robert Nemiro; deportation planned
U.S. immigration authorities have detained Latvian citizen Robert Nemiro, who had been living in the country illegally since 2012. He now faces deportation after a criminal history that includes violent and drug-related offenses.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced the detention of Robert Nemiro, a Latvian national who once worked as a professional television dancer. He was taken into custody on July 28 following information provided by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
According to DHS, Nemiro had previously been convicted of assault with a firearm and disturbing the peace. He had also been arrested in connection with allegations of violence, sexual harassment, drug possession, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Officials say Nemiro entered the United States in October 2011 on a visa. After the visa expired in August 2012, he remained in the country without legal status. Removal proceedings have been initiated against him.
DHS noted that despite California’s so-called sanctuary state status, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) managed to detain Nemiro, and he is expected to be deported in the near future.
Nemiro later became a repeat offender, with a criminal record involving violent crimes and drug-related violations. The agency used the case to criticize California’s immigration policies.
