US approves possible sale of air defense weapons to Ukraine worth over $2 billion

The US State Department has approved a possible sale of military equipment to Ukraine for upgrading air defense systems. The deal's estimated total value is approximately $2.68 billion.

The US State Department has approved a possible sale of military goods to Ukraine under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program. The deal covers equipment and services for upgrading air defense systems, with an estimated total value of $2.68 billion.

Funding sources

If finalized, Ukraine would finance the deal through a combination of European contributions and US Foreign Military Financing (FMF) funds allocated under the previous administration.

What the request includes

Ukraine has requested to purchase several items that do not fall under the category of major defense equipment. The list includes S-300 Clone missiles, GAM-67 missiles, laser-guided air defense missile systems with extended range, and improvised transporter erector launchers.

The request also covers modification kits for mobile launch systems, RPS 202 radar stations for countering drones, trailers with elevating masts, major overhaul and maintenance work.

Additionally, the list includes spare parts, consumables and components, repair and equipment return services, software and technical documentation, transportation services, as well as engineering and logistics support from the US government and contractors.
