US lifts export ban on Anthropic's powerful AI models

The US administration has removed export restrictions on Anthropic's advanced AI models Fable 5 and Mythos 5, restoring global access. The decision is unusual given the US typically advocates for looser AI controls.

The US administration has lifted export restrictions on two of Anthropic's most powerful artificial intelligence models – Fable 5 and Mythos 5. The company announced late Tuesday, June 30, that global access to these models would be restored.

The restrictions were imposed in mid-June, citing national security concerns. Since Anthropic could not distinguish users by nationality, the company was forced to disable both services entirely.

This White House intervention is unprecedented, as the US administration usually pushes for looser controls over artificial intelligence. The move has also drawn criticism from Western allies.

The use of AI for military purposes is considered particularly risky. Anthropic is currently engaged in a legal dispute with the US Department of Defense over unlimited use of the technology. The company refuses to grant the Pentagon unrestricted access, stating it does not want AI used for mass surveillance or fully autonomous weapons systems. Subsequently, the Pentagon classified Anthropic as a "security risk in the supply chain," which the company is challenging in court.

Anthropic is known for its chatbot Claude, while Mythos is the company's most advanced model.
