US Health Officials Continue Flagging Lettuce-Linked Outbreaks
US regulators are still tracking outbreaks of foodborne illness tied to fresh leafy greens, including cyclosporiasis and salmonellosis, prompting some consumers to turn to indoor home gardening as an alternative.

The US Food and Drug Administration continues to record multiple outbreaks of foodborne illness linked to fresh leafy greens this summer. One of the most significant cases involved cyclosporiasis, with investigators identifying iceberg lettuce sold by Taylor Farms de Mexico as the likely source. While experts say the threat from this particular outbreak appears to be easing, the broader issue of contaminated produce has not gone away.
The FDA has also flagged a more recent cluster of cyclosporiasis cases possibly linked to parsley and cilantro. Alongside cyclosporiasis, the agency continues to monitor outbreaks of salmonellosis as well. Officials note that commercially produced leafy greens cannot be guaranteed safe, since consumers typically have no way of knowing exactly how a product was grown, handled, or transported before reaching store shelves.
Growing greens at home as an alternative
Some consumers are turning to home gardening as a way to sidestep these risks. A WIRED commerce editor, for instance, has spent nearly two years growing organic salad greens and herbs—along with vegetables like beans and zucchini—in her living room using an indoor gardening system called Lettuce Grow Farmstand. According to her experience, the setup has allowed her family of three to avoid buying almost all of their vegetables from the grocery store.
Such systems typically rely on a water pump and LED lighting that use relatively little electricity, and come with an initial batch of seedlings plus enough nutrients for several growing cycles. The upfront cost is significant, but proponents say it can pay for itself over time by reducing spending on store-bought produce. The manufacturer now recommends quarantining and treating new seedlings upon arrival, a step that has reportedly reduced earlier pest problems reported by users.
