US urges Russia and Ukraine to return to negotiating table at UN Security Council
A US representative at the UN Security Council called on Russia and Ukraine to stop strikes on civilian targets and resume negotiations to end the war. The meeting was held on Ukraine's Independence Day.
At a UN Security Council meeting dedicated to Ukraine's Independence Day, US Deputy Permanent Representative Dan Negrea called on Russia and Ukraine to stop strikes on civilian sites and return to the negotiating table, according to Ukrinform's report on Monday.
Negrea stressed that the United States is reiterating President Donald Trump's call for an immediate ceasefire and good-faith negotiations to end the war between Russia and Ukraine. He noted that the death toll keeps rising after every new strike.
Call to halt attacks
The US representative said both sides must stop any strikes that damage civilian vessels or threaten to damage them. He said it makes no sense to keep spilling innocent civilian blood when there is no military solution to this war.
Negrea urged both sides to return to negotiations and assured that the United States would play any constructive role it could to help facilitate talks between Moscow and Kyiv to reach that outcome. At the same time, he reaffirmed that the United States remains committed to Ukraine's future as a sovereign and prosperous state.
Ahead of the session, Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said the UN Security Council would convene on Ukraine's Independence Day to discuss the consequences of Russia's war in Ukraine.
