USA Men's National Team Ends Group Stage with Loss to Turkey; Australia Advances to Knockouts

The USMNT fell 2-3 to Turkey in their final Group D match but still finished first in the group. Australia secured second place with a goalless draw against Paraguay, advancing to the knockout rounds.

The United States men's national soccer team concluded its World Cup group stage campaign with a 2-3 defeat to Turkey on Thursday. Despite the loss, the USA maintained the top spot in Group D, having already clinched advancement to the knockout stage. The match saw an early lead for the Americans when Aston Trasty scored in the third minute. Turkey quickly responded through Arda Guler, and Orkun Kokcu put them ahead in the 31st minute. Sebastian Berhalter equalized early in the second half with a strike from the edge of the box. However, Can Ayhan scored in stoppage time to give Turkey a 3-2 victory, their first win of the tournament. Turkey was already eliminated after two previous losses.

In the other Group D match, Australia and Paraguay played to a 0-0 draw. That result gave Australia second place in the group with four points, while Paraguay also finished with four points but in third place. Australia had earlier beaten Turkey 2-0, and the USA had defeated Paraguay 4-1 and Australia 2-0.

Final Group D standings: USA 6 points, Australia 4, Paraguay 4, Turkey 3. This World Cup is the first to feature 48 teams, divided into 12 groups of four. The top two from each group, along with the eight best third-placed teams, will advance to the knockout stage.

The group stage ends on June 27, with the knockout rounds starting June 28. Semifinals are scheduled for July 14 and 15, the third-place match on July 18, and the final on July 19.
