US imposes 50% tariffs on Canadian goods
US President Donald Trump has signed an order imposing 50% tariffs on certain Canadian goods in response to what he calls discriminatory treatment of American products.
US President Donald Trump has imposed 50% tariffs on specific categories of goods imported from Canada. According to the White House, Trump signed three executive orders introducing 50% tariffs on certain Canadian products in retaliation for Canada's discriminatory treatment of American goods.
The new tariffs cover everyday consumer items such as wine and hockey sticks, as well as industrial products like construction cement. However, energy resources, potash fertilizers, fish, and critical minerals are exempt. The tariffs also apply to products that were previously protected under the USMCA trade agreement between the US, Mexico, and Canada.
These tariffs add to existing trade restrictions between the two countries. The US already applies tariffs ranging from 15% to 50% on Canadian steel, aluminum, and copper, as well as a 35% tariff on Canadian softwood lumber and a 25% tax on non-US auto parts.
Trump previously accused Canada of refusing to clean up forest debris, which he claims causes air pollution in the US, and threatened to increase tariffs.
