US 50% Tariff on Canadian Goods Takes Effect After Trade Talks Collapse

On August 22, a new 50% US tariff on Canadian goods took effect after last-minute trade negotiations between Washington and Ottawa broke down overnight. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the suspension of talks and confirmed Ottawa's readiness to impose retaliatory tariffs on US imports.

New tariffs imposed by the United States on Canadian goods, set at 50%, took effect on August 22. The move follows the collapse of trade negotiations between Washington and Ottawa, which fell apart overnight, just before the tariffs were due to take hold.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that the talks had been suspended. He also confirmed that Ottawa stands ready to impose its own import duties on goods coming from the United States in response.

The dispute points to an escalation in bilateral trade relations between the two countries, with no resolution reached so far.
