Democratic US Representative Marcy Kaptur is recovering in hospital after being involved in a car crash in Toledo, Ohio, on Sunday. Her office said she sustained injuries that are not life-threatening and remains alert and active.

The accident occurred shortly before 11 a.m. local time and involved two vehicles. Local police described the incident as a hit-and-run. Kaptur, who is 80, was a passenger in one of the cars and was on her way to church at the time. Authorities at the Toledo Police Department declined to comment to Reuters but provided details to local media.

Kaptur has represented Ohio’s 9th congressional district for 43 years, making her the longest-serving female lawmaker in the history of the House of Representatives. She is seeking another term in the upcoming autumn elections, where she will face Derek Merrin, a Republican former member of the Ohio state legislature.

The district she represents includes part of Toledo and stretches across northwestern Ohio along the southern shore of Lake Erie. Born in Toledo, Kaptur worked in urban planning and advised Jimmy Carter’s administration before entering politics herself.
