The US House of Representatives has passed a bill by a decisive majority that introduces a wide-ranging package of new sanctions targeting Russia and those who support it.

Tariff power

A key provision of the bill would grant the US president authority to impose tariffs of up to 100% on countries that continue purchasing Russian energy resources. This mechanism is intended as additional pressure on nations that maintain energy trade ties with Russia.

Next steps

Following approval in the House, the bill has been sent to President Donald Trump, who must sign it for it to take effect. It is not yet known when the president will decide on signing the document.
