In the US, pet and baby names are converging
Popular dog and cat names in the US increasingly overlap with names given to children, reflecting pets' growing role as family members. Surveys show almost all pet owners consider their animals part of the family.

American families are increasingly treating pets as full family members, a trend reflected in naming choices — several of the most popular dog and cat names in the US this year overlap with names commonly given to children.
This year's most popular dog name in the US is Bella, closely tied to the girl's name Isabella, which ranks seventh among the most popular girls' names, while the shortened form Bella itself ranks 87th. A similar pattern appears with Leo, the third most popular cat name and simultaneously the 24th most popular boy's name. Chloe ranks 21st among girls' names and 35th among cat names.
Pets as family members
Surveys show that 97% of dog and cat owners in the US consider their pets part of the family, and 51% even say a pet is as important to the family as a person. Spending habits reflect this attitude as well — Americans spend more than 147 billion dollars a year on pets, ranging from quality food and grooming products to luxury items.
At the same time, debate continues around so-called "fur babies." Some people believe pets should not be equated with children, while others argue that the love for pets and their place within the family is no less significant.
The top ten most popular dog names in the US for 2026 include Bella, Luna, Max, Coco, Daisy, Milo, Buddy, Lucy, Charlie and Lola.
