Two helicopters collided in mid-air near a municipal airport in northwestern Oregon, in the United States, and three people were killed, CNN reported, citing the Yamhill County Sheriff's Office.

Rescuers found the wreckage on a private agricultural field near McMinnville Municipal Airport, roughly 40 miles (about 64 kilometres) southwest of Portland, Oregon's largest city.

Who was on board

One helicopter carried two people: a 22-year-old flight instructor from Texas, Maddie Aasbo, and a student pilot from the United Kingdom. Yamhill County Sheriff Sam Elliott gave the details at a press conference on Thursday evening. The student's name is being withheld until relatives are notified.

The other helicopter had a single occupant, its pilot, 38-year-old Tyler Sturdevant of Newberg, Oregon.

Appeal to the public

The sheriff's office asked the public to stay away from the area and to show patience while authorities respond to what it called an extraordinary incident. The source does not state what caused the collision or whether an investigation is under way.
