Planned Agreement

Citing two anonymous US officials, the New York Times reported on Tuesday that the Trump administration plans to officially sign and announce an agreement with Saudi Arabia on Wednesday. The administration stated that the deal would secure billions of dollars for the US nuclear energy industry.

Terms of the Deal

According to the Wall Street Journal, the contract will be for 30 years and will include a provision requiring American companies to build a uranium enrichment plant in Saudi Arabia if a joint study deems it justified.

Concerns Over Nuclear Weapons Development

Several US lawmakers and Israeli officials have raised objections to the civilian nuclear energy project in Saudi Arabia, fearing it could be repurposed to develop nuclear weapons.

Procedure

The agreement is expected to be submitted to Congress in the coming days, but congressional approval is not required for it to take effect.
