Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz stated after a meeting with US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth at a NATO defense ministers' meeting in Brussels that Washington has responded positively to Warsaw's proposal for a permanent US military base in Poland. The minister confirmed receiving an official response to the letter sent on May 29.
Kosiniak-Kamysz cautioned against excessive optimism, emphasizing that no final decision has been made and discussions remain in the planning stage. Earlier in June, he noted that Poland is already investing in hosting US forces and promised to create even more attractive conditions for an expanded presence.
Meanwhile, the Pentagon has halted the planned rotation of approximately 4,000 US troops to Poland. Following talks with Hegseth in May, Kosiniak-Kamysz said the US official assured him that no decision to reduce the US military presence in Poland had been made, and that forces were simply being reorganized in Europe.
Later, US President Trump announced the deployment of an additional 5,000 troops to Poland, describing the move as a result of his relationship with Polish President Nawrocki, whom he supported during the 2025 presidential election campaign. Currently, around 10,000 US troops are stationed in Poland, mostly on a rotational basis.
