Trump vows to seize Iran's Kharg Island, key oil export hub
US President Donald Trump has threatened to seize Iran's Kharg Island, a vital export terminal for Iranian crude oil. The move would severely impact Iran's economy and could lead to military confrontation.

US President Donald Trump on Thursday announced on Truth Social that the United States will 'in the not too distant future' seize control of Iran's Kharg Island and other oil infrastructure points, aiming to assume total control of Iran's oil and gas markets.
Kharg Island, a small coral outcrop located about 25 kilometres off the Iranian coast, is crucial for Iran's crude oil exports. It houses some of Iran's largest oil storage tanks, endpoints of export pipelines, deep-water loading terminals, as well as military and air defence installations.
If Tehran loses control of Kharg, its oil exports would not completely stop but would be severely impacted, increasing pressure on Iran's economy. US occupation of the island could also tie down Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps.
For the US military, seizing the island would be a challenging but feasible operation. It would require neutralizing the island's air-defence systems, landing forces, and establishing cover. However, holding the island would be difficult because it is close to the Iranian coast, allowing Iran to conduct continuous attacks using ballistic missiles, drones, cruise missiles, attack boats, combat divers, and special forces.
Iran faces a dilemma. If it attempts to dislodge US forces with missile or drone strikes, it risks damaging its own oil tanks, loading equipment, pipelines, and port infrastructure. Tehran could instead target US supply lines, warships, tanker traffic, and American bases in the region to pressure Washington.
However, there is a significant counterargument. If Iran's leadership concludes that the island is lost for good or that the American presence threatens the regime's survival, it could consider making the island inoperable. In an extreme scenario, Tehran might sacrifice all or part of Kharg if it believes this would inflict disproportionate losses on US forces or exert political pressure on the Trump administration. For Iran, Kharg Island is not just a military facility but a vital economic asset, and its future will be key to shaping the course of the conflict.
