Vote counting in the US congressional elections indicates that Democratic Party candidates are winning Senate seats convincingly. The Senate is the upper chamber of the US Congress. The wins include states that previously elected Republicans, which means opponents of President Donald Trump could end up with a majority in the chamber. The information is based on tallies published by American media.

What the count shows

As of 6:30 a.m. Kyiv time, Democratic Senate candidates had won in at least five states where Republicans hold seats in the current Congress. To secure a Senate majority, the Democrats needed to take four such "red" states without losing any of their own seats.

In the first hours of counting, Republicans suffered an early and heavy defeat in South Carolina, Texas, Ohio, North Carolina and Kansas.

Beyond the forecasts

These results exceed the forecasts that were optimistic for the Democrats. They also mean that more Senate seats will be held by a majority opposed to the president.

The Ukrainian outlet European Pravda has already written about the possible consequences in an article on Americans against Trump and a probable Republican defeat in the congressional elections. It has also published a video on what such an outcome would change for Ukraine.
