US midterms: can Democrats capitalise on Latino voters' regret over backing Trump?
After Latino voters helped return Donald Trump to the White House in 2024, polls show his support among them has fallen sharply. As the US midterm elections approach, Democrats are trying to win back this former core part of their base.
As the US midterm elections approach, the Democratic Party is looking for ways to win back Latino voters. Midterms are the congressional elections held halfway through a presidential term. In 2024, Latinos accounted for a 46 percent share of the vote that helped Donald Trump win the presidency, but polls now show his support among them has dropped dramatically.
Why support has fallen
According to the source, some Latino voters say they regret backing Trump. They point to the immigration crackdown, violent raids by ICE (US Immigration and Customs Enforcement) and the rising cost of living.
The Democrats' challenge
Latino voters were once an essential part of the Democratic base. The question now is whether the party can turn this sense of regret into actual votes.
To find out, France 24 reporters Sam Ball and Barbara Gabel spoke with Latino voters and local Democrats in Phoenix, the capital of the state of Arizona.
