The Democratic Party has won a majority in the US House of Representatives, the lower chamber of Congress, according to preliminary midterm election results. It has secured 220 seats, while 218 are needed for a majority. This means the Democrats control both chambers of Congress, so President Donald Trump's Republican Party will have to contend with an opposition-led legislature. The results were reported by the Ukrainian outlet European Pravda.

The numbers in each chamber

Based on current data, Republicans have won 128 seats in the House. Another 87 seats remain undecided because vote counting continues.

In the Senate, the upper chamber, Democrats have won 53 seats, with 51 needed for a majority. Republicans have 42 senators, and five seats are still undetermined.

Trump's reaction

US President Donald Trump explained his party's poor showing by saying Republicans would have won had he been on the ballot. He also said he accepts the election results and is ready to work with the Democratic majority in Congress.

The source notes that analysis of the consequences of the vote, including what a Republican defeat could mean for Ukraine, has been published separately. Final results will be known once all ballots have been counted.
