The crash was announced by the Edwards Air Force Base command in a press release. "According to a preliminary assessment, survival in the crash was impossible," the statement said.
The bomber crashed shortly after takeoff, just before noon local time. Emergency services are working at the crash site, and an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the tragedy.
The B-52 bomber was developed in the 1950s during the Cold War between the US and the Soviet Union. It is capable of carrying nuclear weapons.
According to CNN, the last fatal incident involving a B-52 was in 2008 near the island of Guam in the Pacific Ocean, killing six US military personnel.
