US Trade Representative Confirms New Tariff Plan

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer publicly confirmed on Tuesday that the Donald Trump administration is preparing new tariffs, as previously reported unofficially by media outlets. Greer stated that an announcement is expected soon but declined to provide a specific timeline, citing the need to inform Congress and other parties first.
According to CNBC, as cited by European Pravda, the new tariffs are likely to be announced immediately after the expiration of the current 10% tariffs, which end at midnight Washington time on July 24. President Trump imposed these tariffs in February after the Supreme Court blocked his more ambitious tariff regime. Congressional extension of these tariffs is considered highly unlikely.
The Trump administration has already initiated steps to continue the protectionist policy. In early June, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative proposed additional tariffs of up to 12.5% on goods from 60 countries, based on Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, which allows tariffs on suspicions of forced labor.
On July 20, Trump signed additional 50% tariffs on a range of Canadian goods. In June, the president threatened tariffs on countries that impose digital services taxes on U.S. companies.
