A US military operation has killed the leader of the Venezuelan-based transnational gang "Tren de Aragua", President Donald Trump announced. The gang leader, Hector Rustenford Guerrero Flores, known as Ninjo Guerrero, was killed in what Trump described as a "fast and lethal" operation, closely coordinated with friends in Venezuela.

The US has designated "Tren de Aragua" as a terrorist organization. A New York federal court had indicted Guerrero in absentia in December on charges including extortion conspiracy and terrorism support. US prosecutor Jay Clayton then stated that the gang was responsible for numerous acts of violence, extortion, and drug trafficking across North America, South America, and Europe. Trump nominated Clayton for Director of National Intelligence on Thursday.

The US State Department had offered a reward of up to $5 million for information leading to Guerrero's capture. Trump declared that the gang no longer has a safe haven in Venezuela or anywhere else. His administration has taken extraordinary measures, including strikes on drug smuggling vessels near the Venezuelan coast, targeting the gang blamed for drug trafficking and violence in US cities.
