US State Department lists leftist activists as Cuba's 'front groups and fellow travelers'

As part of the Trump administration's ongoing crackdown on left-leaning groups, the US State Department has published a report labeling several activists and organizations as "front groups and fellow travelers" for Cuba. The 100-page document, released Monday, denounces Cuba as the "capital of 21st-century communism" and alleges a Cuban "campaign of subversion" that has infiltrated the highest levels of the US government, recruited American activists, and backed left-wing terrorism on American soil.

The report singles out leftist figures including Hasan Piker, Amazon Labor Union founder Chris Smalls, Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), Isra Hirsi (daughter of Representative Ilhan Omar), New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, and journalist Amy Goodman for their criticism of US policy toward Cuba or participation in Cuba solidarity movements.

The DSA, of which Mamdani is a member, is described as a "particularly potent illustration of the ideological victory of Cuba's effort to position itself as the spiritual capital of Third Worldist radicalism." The report accuses the DSA of maintaining a "fierce, almost religious commitment to the cause of the Cuban regime."

This report comes shortly after Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the son of Cuban immigrants and a vocal critic of Cuba's communist government, imposed additional sanctions on Cuba, targeting its tourism ministry and several state-owned companies. Rubio has long advocated for "maximum pressure" against Havana, arguing that easing sanctions only strengthens the Cuban regime.

Earlier this month, Cuba experienced its third nationwide blackout in six months amid an oil blockade imposed by the Trump administration on the island of 9.6 million people, prompting many residents to describe living conditions as "agony."
