Atletico Madrid in talks over Tottenham captain Romero

Atletico Madrid representatives have held discussions over a potential move for Tottenham captain Cristian Romero, who is expected to leave the London club this summer despite signing a new four-year contract with Spurs last August.

Inter Milan have also shown interest in the 28-year-old centre-back. Romero featured in all seven of Argentina's matches last month during their run to a tournament final, which they lost to Spain.

A long-standing target for Simeone

Atletico manager Diego Simeone has reportedly viewed Romero as a long-term target, and the club is said to be preparing another attempt to sign him. Tottenham are aware of Atletico's interest, and reaching agreement with the player on personal terms is not expected to be a problem.

Spurs head coach Roberto de Zerbi recently said he would respect the wishes of any player wanting to leave the club.

Romero missed the closing stretch of last season with a knee injury, a period during which Tottenham avoided relegation on the final day of the campaign. He was also sent off twice during the season, as Spurs finished 17th in the league.

Separately, fellow centre-back Micky van de Ven is reportedly close to agreeing a new five-year deal with Tottenham.
