German luxury carmaker Audi will build its first factory in the United States, in the state of Georgia, and details have now emerged about what it will produce. Audi chief Christian Dellner told journalists in an interview that the plant will make the large SUVs Q7, Q8 and Q9. The decision to build the plant became known earlier this week.

Investment and timeline

The project is to receive more than four billion US dollars in investment and will create about 4,500 jobs. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, with production starting in the early 2030s.

Which vehicles will be built

The new plant will produce cars with combustion engines and plug-in hybrids. Fully electric SUVs are not planned. Roughly half of the vehicles built will be intended for the US market.

Why the plant is needed

The aim is to strengthen Audi's position in North America and reduce its dependence on import tariffs, meaning duties on goods brought in from other countries. For now, the Q7, Q8 and Q9 for the US market are due to be shipped from the plant in Bratislava, Slovakia.

Producing in the US would make Audi more competitive in the large luxury SUV segment, where it competes with BMW, Mercedes-Benz and domestic manufacturers.
