Audi introduces new flagship 2027 Q9 designed with US in mind
Audi has unveiled the 2027 Q9, a full-size SUV that becomes the brand's new flagship, tailored for the American market.
In Munich, Audi has finally joined the full-size SUV segment with the debut of the 2027 Q9. Unlike the Q7, which was primarily designed for Europe, the Q9 targets the US market where vehicles like the Cadillac Escalade dominate. The Q9 now sits atop the Audi lineup as the flagship, with no immediate plans to replace the A8 sedan.
Measuring 209 inches (5,309 mm) long, 79.2 inches (2,012 mm) wide, and 71.4 inches (1,814 mm) tall, the Q9 has a wheelbase of 123.5 inches (3,137 mm) – 5.6 inches (142 mm) longer than the Q7. Most of that extra length is dedicated to a more spacious third row. Despite its size, the Q9 appears less imposing than rivals like the Mercedes-Benz GLS or BMW X7, thanks to curvier body panels and subtle creases. Large wheels also create an optical illusion that makes the car look smaller and closer.
The Q9 rides on Volkswagen Group's Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) architecture, shared with the new Q7. At launch, it will be offered with a 2.9-liter V6 engine, while the sporty SQ9 variant features a twin-turbo V8 from the RS6/RS7 models. The SQ9 is distinguished by wider wheel arches, larger alloy wheels, and a different illuminated grille. Audi says the SQ9's all-wheel drive system is rear-biased for daily driving.
With the Q9, Audi enters a segment that has been successful for its competitors. The SUV is expected to arrive in showrooms as a 2027 model.
