Audio-Technica rounds out open-back headphone line with wireless ATH-AL5NC
Audio-Technica has released the ATH-AL5NC, a $279 wireless open-back headphone offering more natural sound but no noise isolation. The model extends the company's previously wired open-back lineup into Bluetooth territory.
Audio-Technica has launched the ATH-AL5NC, the wireless counterpart to its existing open-back headphone lineup that was previously available only in wired form. The new model brings Bluetooth connectivity to the open-back design while keeping the same natural sound presentation the format is known for. Priced at $279, the headphones are available starting today and ship with a 1.2-meter cable and a carrying pouch.
The ATH-AL5NC uses 53mm drivers and supports high-resolution wireless audio at 24-bit/96kHz via the LDAC codec, in addition to AAC and SBC. The headphones also support multipoint Bluetooth pairing, letting users stay connected to two devices simultaneously. Audio-Technica states the battery can deliver up to 75 hours of continuous playback, with a 15-minute quick charge providing an additional eight hours of listening time.
Software features
Through Audio-Technica's CONNECT app, users can adjust presets, switch codecs, tune the EQ, and toggle between dedicated modes for low-latency gaming, noise reduction, and sound leakage reduction.
Trade-offs of an open design
The open-back construction allows air to pass through the ear cups and past the drivers, which Audio-Technica says helps reduce heat buildup while producing a more natural sound compared to closed-back headphones. The design also applies minimal clamping pressure, intended to improve comfort during extended wear. The downside is that sound leaks out more than with closed headphones, and true noise cancellation isn't possible — a limitation Audio-Technica addresses partly through its software modes. The ATH-AL5NC costs more than alternatives like the $150 HyperX Cloud Alpha Air, though it adds the convenience of wireless Bluetooth connectivity.
