Supreme Court to decide on cassation in Skurulis case over CSDD system vulnerability

Latvia's Supreme Court will decide today whether to move forward with a cassation appeal in the criminal case against inventor Raimonds Skurulis, who faces an extortion charge.

Background of the case

The charge stems from an incident in which Skurulis discovered a security vulnerability, described as a "hole," in the information technology system of the Road Traffic Safety Directorate (CSDD). After identifying the flaw, he reported it to the agency itself.

However, in connection with this discovery, Skurulis is accused of demanding 1,000 euros, which became the basis for the extortion charge against him.

What happens next

The Supreme Court must now determine whether there are grounds to initiate cassation proceedings, meaning whether the rulings of the lower courts should be reviewed at the highest judicial level. This decision will determine whether the case continues before the Supreme Court or whether the previous court rulings remain in force.
