In a recent interview, Minister of Agriculture Armands Augulis emphasized that discussions on changing forest logging conditions are far from over. He stressed the importance of not letting trees overgrow and using timber in a timely manner, drawing a parallel with wheat harvesting: one should not wait until it spoils in the field. Augulis noted that active talks are taking place within the Forest Consultative Council, which includes environmental organizations, and he disagreed that opinions are too polarized.

The minister pointed out that state forest resources and managed areas are shrinking, but replanting and quality management continue. He expressed hope for reaching consensus with environmental groups, citing the example of sea trout farming, where scientific opinions vary. Augulis stated he does not believe Latvian entrepreneurs would act against public interests, but the economic effect must not be lost.

Regarding the forest sector policy guidelines, Augulis said an environmental impact assessment is expected in August, after which the document could be submitted for approval in September. The guidelines, covering up to 2040, will define forest management practices while preserving biodiversity. He noted that managed areas are decreasing partly due to Natura 2000, whose approval has been delayed by a year. The guidelines must clearly indicate where economic activity is allowed, considering factors like the eastern border.

Augulis highlighted the need to boost local production, noting that currently 70% of solid wood for furniture manufacturing is imported from Sweden. He urged that such raw materials should be produced domestically.
