August storm damage estimated at 20 million euros so far
Three weeks after a destructive August storm hit Latvia, estimated damage has reached around 20 million euros, though the full extent remains unclear. Costs are split between state support and insurance payouts.
Three weeks have passed since a powerful storm struck Latvia in August, giving municipalities time to calculate the costs of dealing with the damage. According to current estimates, state support needed to help municipalities cover their storm-related expenses may total less than five million euros.
Meanwhile, insurance companies have already received claims from residents and businesses worth approximately 13 million euros. Combined, this brings the currently known total damage close to 20 million euros.
Full extent still unknown
It is important to note that this figure is not final, as it reflects only the information gathered so far. The scale of damage suffered by electricity distribution operator Sadales tīkli, whose infrastructure was affected during the storm, has not yet been determined.
Similarly, the damage caused to farmers — including harm to crops and other losses on their farms — has not been fully assessed. This means the overall damage total is likely to rise further once complete data is collected across all affected sectors.
