Mid-August in Latvia cooler than usual, weather agency data shows

Latvia's Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre (LVĢMC) has published its summary of weather conditions for the second ten-day period of August. The average air temperature across the country during this stretch was +16.3 degrees Celsius, which is 0.6 degrees below the long-term norm for the period.

Despite the generally cooler backdrop, individual days saw much warmer conditions. The highest temperature recorded, +28.7 degrees, was measured on August 15 in Jelgava, while the lowest, +6 degrees, occurred on August 13 in Stende.

Rainfall below normal

Average precipitation for the period was 15.9 millimeters, roughly 60% of the usual amount for this time of year. Daugavpils saw the heaviest rainfall at 34.8 millimeters, while the driest spot was Vičaki in Ventspils municipality, which recorded just 5.3 millimeters.

While drought and moisture indicators for the one-month period were within normal range nationwide, the three-month picture shows elevated moisture levels persisting in some areas, particularly around Ventspils.

Humidity and wind

Average relative humidity during the period stood at 78%, ranging from 71% in Riga to 84% in Rēzekne. The strongest wind gust, 19.3 meters per second, was recorded on August 11 in Daugavgrīva.
