The Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre has released its assessment of August weather, showing the month was on average wetter than the long-term climate norm, news agency LETA reported.

According to the centre's data, one day during August turned out to be the rainiest single day ever recorded since weather observations began in Latvia, with an unprecedented amount of precipitation falling within 24 hours.

The average temperature for the month was slightly above the historical norm, though the difference was modest. Overall, August was characterized more by unusually high rainfall than by significant warmth.

The figures come from the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre, the country's official source for climate and weather statistics.
