Australian comedian Judith Lucy reveals breast cancer diagnosis

Australian comedian and actor Judith Lucy, 58, shared a video on Instagram on Tuesday revealing she has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

She explained the diagnosis followed an unusual result from a mammogram taken through the BreastScreen Australia program, and urged women not to delay their own screenings.

From lumpectomy to mastectomy

Lucy had been scheduled for a lumpectomy last week, a procedure to remove just the tumour. During the operation, however, a doctor she refers to as "Doctor Fun" discovered additional areas of cancer.

Lucy said the cancer is early-stage and relatively non-aggressive, but plans have now changed to a full mastectomy of the affected breast, scheduled for the following Friday. She has also decided to have her other, unaffected breast removed at the same time, joking that after four decades she is ready to go without.

A wellness book, poorly timed

Earlier this month Lucy released her latest book, Well Well Well, exploring her long fascination with the wellness industry. She noted the irony of the book's release coinciding with her diagnosis, but said its message — that there are no quick fixes for health — still stands.

Lucy said she is in shock but doing okay, and did not rule out that her treatment experience could inspire a follow-up book. Fellow comedians, including Geraldine Hickey and Celia Pacquola, offered public messages of support.

Lucy is one of Australia's best-known standup comedians, having announced her retirement from standup in 2022 due to long-term anxiety. She has written four books, hosted podcasts, and appeared in several films and theatre productions.
