Australia overturn Scotland with dominant second-half surge

Scotland's women's rugby side fell to a third consecutive defeat in the WXV Global Series, unable to hold onto a half-time lead as Australia stormed back to win 30-10 in Edinburgh.

Following earlier losses to Canada and New Zealand, ranked second and third in the world, Scotland had hoped to pick up their first points of the tournament against Australia, ranked just one place below them. Evie Gallagher opened the scoring in the 15th minute, finishing off a spell of sustained pressure near the Australian try line.

Scotland continued to dominate large parts of the first half, but errors at the line-out cost the hosts promising attacking opportunities. Australia grew stronger as the half progressed, hitting back with a well-constructed try finished by Desiree Miller out wide. Scotland responded immediately through a Helen Nelson penalty, taking a 10-5 lead into the break.

However, Australia produced a dramatic turnaround after the interval, scoring three tries in quick succession. Scrum-half Samantha Wood dived over from a rolling maul and converted her own try to put Australia ahead for the first time. Scotland's task was made harder when Gallagher was sin-binned for illegally collapsing the maul. With the extra player, Australia extended their lead through tries from Brianna Hoy and Faitala Moleko, moving to 24-10. Wood added two late penalties to complete a dominant second-half performance and seal a 30-10 win.

The two sides will meet again next weekend in Sydney.
