Police in the Australian state of Victoria are continuing to search for a man suspected of attacking three people with an axe in an assault that left the victims with serious injuries. The incident occurred in the Gippsland town of Tyers, where the suspect, who was known to the victims, arrived at a residence at around 12.30pm on Saturday.

According to Victoria police, the man, believed to be in his 50s, attacked an elderly man and woman along with a third person using an axe, causing serious injuries to all three. He then fled the address on foot, but the victims were able to contact emergency services for help.

A specialist air ambulance along with road paramedic crews were dispatched to the scene, where all three victims received treatment before being taken to hospital. Ambulance Victoria said a man in his 70s and a man in his 40s were transported in critical condition, while a woman in her 70s was taken to hospital in serious but stable condition.

Search ongoing

The suspect is believed to have left the property on foot. Victoria police launched a large-scale search on Saturday that continued into Sunday. He was last seen wearing a black and mustard-coloured jacket and carrying a black backpack.

Police have warned that the man may be armed with an axe and a handsaw, and have urged members of the public who spot him not to approach, but to immediately call emergency services on Triple Zero (000).
