A former Syrian police chief who was convicted in Austria of crimes committed during Syria's civil war has been detained in Syria, according to reports.

Musab Abu Rukbah received an eight-year prison sentence in Austria over his role in abuses carried out during the conflict. After the verdict, he filed an appeal against the sentence but subsequently left Austria and traveled to Syria, where authorities have now taken him into custody.

The case highlights the ongoing efforts by European courts to prosecute individuals accused of committing atrocities during Syria's civil war, as well as the challenges of ensuring that those convicted actually serve their sentences once they leave the country where they were tried.
