Dozens killed, many injured in collision of two buses in eastern Syria

Deadly bus collision in eastern Syria

At least 35 people have been killed and 30 others injured following a collision between two buses on a major highway in eastern Syria. The incident occurred on Saturday on the road linking the capital Damascus with Deir al-Zour province.

According to the Syrian Interior Ministry, one of the buses was transporting security personnel, while the other carried civilian passengers. State television footage showed one of the vehicles engulfed in flames after the impact.

Military helicopters were dispatched to the scene to assist with medical evacuations and the recovery of bodies. The authorities have not yet determined the cause of the crash.

The highway where the accident took place is often referred to as the "road of death" due to its history of frequent and severe traffic incidents.

Investigations into the crash are ongoing.
