Record heatwave hits eastern Europe
While western Europe reeled under a heatwave last week, central and eastern Europe also experienced record temperatures, leading to power outages in Ukraine and a violent storm in Romania.

Last week, as France, Italy, the UK and other parts of western Europe struggled with a heatwave, central and eastern Europe also sweltered under extreme temperatures. The Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and the Balkans recorded all-time high temperatures.
In Ukraine, power outages were imposed as the electricity grid buckled under surging demand due to the heat. Meanwhile, Romania was hit by a violent storm after its own heatwave, causing damage.
This summer's deadly heat arrived earlier than usual and has already broken previous temperature records, testing the limits of societies to cope with such extreme weather conditions.
