The Riga Eastern Clinical University Hospital has completed a three-year project co-financed by the European Union's EU4Health program, aimed at strengthening the National Microbiology Reference Laboratory's ability to monitor infection spread and identify outbreaks. The project focused on upgrading infrastructure for sample preparation, sequencing, and data analysis, with an emphasis on whole-genome sequencing and genomic epidemiology.

New sequencing equipment was acquired, enabling more detailed analysis of complex cases and better characterization of pathogens. Sample pretreatment was improved through the introduction of robotic protocols and additional equipment, including nucleic acid extraction platforms, centrifuges, and homogenizers. The data center infrastructure was also significantly enhanced, allowing for local storage and processing of large sequencing datasets, reducing dependence on external resources.

These improvements bolster the laboratory's readiness for future epidemiological crises. Whole-genome sequencing provides high-resolution identification of infection sources and helps determine whether cases are linked. The upgraded infrastructure supports analysis of both healthcare-associated pathogens with antimicrobial resistance and foodborne pathogens.

The project also strengthened collaboration with the Latvian Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, the Institute BIOR, and laboratories in Lithuania and Estonia. Regular data exchange with the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control and cooperation with the EU Reference Laboratory for Antimicrobial Resistance in Denmark are ongoing.

Total project funding amounted to €1,229,858, with €962,485 provided by the European Union.
