Riga Eastern Hospital doctors save Brazilian football coach in over 12-hour operation

Doctors at Riga East Clinical University Hospital (RAKUS) carried out an exceptionally complex operation lasting more than 12 hours. The procedure was needed for a young man — a football coach from Brazil — who had been diagnosed with an extensively spread tumor process in his abdominal cavity.

Given the scale and severity of the condition, the medical team took a combined approach: alongside the surgical intervention, chemotherapy was also administered during the operation. Such a lengthy and multifaceted procedure reflects how serious the patient's condition was and how carefully the treatment had to be planned.

Recovery under way

Following the successful operation, the patient was moved to the Rehabilitation Department at the "Biķernieki" hospital site, which operates as part of RAKUS. There he continues his recovery and has already resumed walking on his own, marking positive progress on the road to recovery.

The case illustrates that Latvian medical institutions are capable of handling highly complex oncological cases requiring both extended surgical intervention and additional therapy within a single procedure.
