AWS bug causes massive billing spikes for some customers
An error in Amazon Web Services' billing system showed some customers charges ranging from millions to trillions of dollars, though actual usage remained unchanged.

On Thursday evening, some Amazon Web Services (AWS) users were alarmed to see their billing estimates surge from a few cents to billions of dollars. An AWS spokesperson confirmed that these figures do not reflect actual usage or charges, but result from a bug.
The issue originated from incorrect unit pricing in AWS's estimated billing computation system. Forums and social media were flooded with concerned customers reporting sky-high bills, many in the millions or billions. One Reddit user even claimed their bill reached $4.2 trillion.
In response, AWS paused estimated billing updates and reverted its system to the most recent accurate billing data. The company stated that no customer action is needed and that the fix could take several hours.
Some users, in panic, deleted all their AWS resources before learning it was a bug. The internet reacted with humor, joking about setting up auto-payments that would take roughly 1.1 billion years to clear the debt.
